The Platypus Insulated Hydration System provides outstanding hydration with great taste, ease of use, high quality construction and stays cold for a long time. Let me tell you why.
I'm in my mid-40's and I have a teenage son and we love the outdoors and everything platypus. We use Camelback packs and take out the camelback bladders and replace with these. We just shove the insulator and bladder in the pack. We can also strap the insulator directly to the backs of mx-style riding armor using the air vent holes. It has greatly enhanced our activity level. I've purchased two 3-liter, and two 2-liter. I never could get my son to use the camelback because he didn't like the taste of the water from the bladder/tube. Even after washing and soaking with lemon juice/water mix for a week. After one initial washing/rinsing the Platypus tastes clean and pure. My son prefers water, and I prefer powder mix gator-aide (no leg cramps at night).
The wide opening of the bladder lets me put in large ice blocks. I always freeze ice blocks from 9-12 oz plastic cups for 3 days to get completely solid, then on the night before I need it, I put in 2-3 of these along with some small ice cubes to make the water cold quick and then put in the Fridge for the next mornings use. I even make up several of these ice blocks at a time and keep them in ziplock bags in the freezer for use. These won't fit in most camelback openings, but they will in this platypus. When I camp for extended days, I make huge 16-32 oz ice blocks that won't fit, but after they melt a few days, they will fit in (a good tip). (Of course, dont fall over backwards with the ice blocks on your back).
The insulator comes with rings and I can easly mount it to the back of our Body Armor with zip-ties when we ride ATV's which is much easier than dealing with armor straps & pack straps getting tangled and uncomfortable. Recently I rode an AZ mountains/desert afternoon for 5 hours 95deg heat through the Box-Canyon, Ajax Mine, Coke Ovens,a 65-mile ride, 5 hours, along with assisting a rider with a flat tire. My 3-liter fluid stayed cold the entire time with only 2 big pre-frozen 12oz ice blocks and gatorade. The other riders without bladder hydration were completely exhausted after the ride but I felt good and could have ridden again. I've even learned how to zip-tie an insulated 2 & 3 liter to the back of my armor for 170 oz of ice cold fluid with the weight neglible since the armor supports it well. Tip: Always have lots different size zip-ties and experiment, you'd be surprised what you can do with these insulated bladder packs.
For hikes, We put these insulated bladders inside Camelback thermobacks/armorbaks (military/police) that I have modified the openings to make the Platypus fit (simple scissor cuts) but its worth it. When we go out in my Jeep wrangler, we just put the insulated bladders in our packs and I hook them to the headrests where they hang behind the seat and we can drink out of the tubes.
My son did a Scout Back-Packing hike/overnight recently. I prepared a 2-liter insulated platypus for him the night before with 3 9-ounce frozen ice blocks and ice cold water. The next day he just took out the insulated bladder and stuck it inside his back-pack with the tube hanging out which he zip-tied to his shoulder strap so he could drink. When he returned the next day the little bit of water left was still cold and there were 3 thumb-size pieces of ice formerly 9-oz ice blocks, I was impressed.
After use, I just rinse out the bladders/tubes/tips, then carefully roll up and store everything except the insulater in Gallon-size ziplock bags and keep them in the Freezer at all times to keep the plastic from getting moldy which they will in the fridge. When I need them, I just take them out, run some hot water over them and proceed to prepare them.
Also, platypus makes cool accesories: quick-disconnects, on/off valves, high-flow bite valves, all these are great. I highly recommend the platypus insulated Hydration system!

I purchased this product to use in my Maxpedition backpack (Vulture 2) when I go hiking. The entire thing, insulator and all, fits just fine in the hydration section of my backpack. I washed it out before using it, and then tried it with water at first and then with Gatorade mix. I noticed no plastic taste with this product (Unlike a certain Camel product. The insulator keeps the liquid nice and cold for a long time, although even with the thick insulation around it, the liquid in the tube still warms up. Either you blow it back when you are done drinking, or you deal with a warm first drink. This product also comes with the cap for the bite piece, which is nice for keeping bugs away from your flavored drinks and keeping dirt out of your mouth if you've scraped the mouth piece against a cliff wall. The mouth piece itself is a high flow design, so just be aware that when you bite down and provide suction, liquid flows very fast into your mouth.
The only thing that I didn't like about this product was the tube length. I feel it could be just a bit longer. By the time I thread it through the hole on the top of my pack and down the shoulder strap, there's just not a lot of slack left. Other than that, I like my Insulator a lot.

I have owned a number of Platypus hydration bladders in the past and always liked them better than other brands because I thought they had the least impact on the taste of the water. Unfortunately, that was not the case with this product. Every time I took a drink from this thing, I encountered a horrible plastic taste. It was almost undrinkable. The only thing I ever put in here was water and I tried cleaning it out over and over again. After some experimentation, I think I narrowed the problem down to the tube. If water sits in the tube for more than a few minutes, it starts to taste really awful. I have no idea why this bladder is different than the other ones that I have owned in the past, but I am sending it back.
